Denzel Clarke's jaw-dropping catch against the Los Angeles Angels has baseball fans buzzing, and rightfully so. The Oakland Athletics outfielder pulled off a spectacular home run robbery that might just be the play of the year.
During Monday's game in Anaheim, Angels' leadoff hitter Nolan Schanuel appeared to have launched a solo home run off Athletics pitcher Grant Holman in the first inning. The ball sailed deep towards center field, seemingly destined to put the Angels ahead early.
But Denzel Clarke had other ideas. Displaying incredible athleticism and timing, Clarke leaped at the wall, reaching over the boundary to snag the ball before it cleared. The catch was so high-reaching that Clarke nearly tumbled over the wall himself, but he landed safely back on the field, igniting a frenzy of excitement among teammates and fans. Holman, along with many others in the stadium, reacted with pure amazement at Clarke's improbable play.
The remarkable catch denied what would have been a 398-foot home run.
For Clarke, a recent call-up to the majors with only 16 games under his belt, this isn't his first highlight-reel grab. Drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Draft from Cal State Northridge, Clarke is quickly making a name for himself with his defensive prowess. While his batting average currently stands at .224, with one home run and three RBIs, he's already created several unforgettable moments.
Just weeks ago, on May 30th, Clarke robbed Alejandro Kirk of a home run against the Toronto Blue Jays with a similar wall-scaling catch, delighting fans back in his home country.
Adding to his impressive recent performances, Clarke also made a sensational running catch against the Baltimore Orioles, preventing a hit from Jorge Mateo with a full-speed dash and well-timed grab just days before his latest heroics. He crashed into the wall on that catch and barely held on.
Clarke's combination of speed, agility, and fearlessness is setting him apart as a defensive force to be reckoned with in Major League Baseball.
