FIA Announces Leadership Shift & Major Financial Turnaround Under Ben Sulayem
In a significant development for global motorsport governance, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has confirmed rallying legend Malcolm Wilson as its new Deputy President for Sport. This high-profile appointment coincides with the release of the FIA's 2024 Activity Report, revealing a dramatic financial recovery and newfound stability under President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Rally Champion Wilson Takes Helm of Sport Division
Malcolm Wilson, the esteemed founder of M-Sport and a towering figure in world rallying, officially steps into the crucial role of Deputy President for Sport. Filling the vacancy left by Robert Reid's resignation, Wilson's nomination by President Ben Sulayem received strong backing during the FIA General Assembly in Macau.
Expressing enthusiasm for his new position, Wilson highlighted his commitment to the FIA's mission: "I'm thrilled to join as Deputy President for Sport. As the Federation drives forward its goals to evolve motorsport and nurture grassroots programs, I'm eager to contribute to shaping the future of our beloved sport. Collaborating with the President to enhance and fortify our championships is a key priority."
President Ben Sulayem emphasized Wilson's unparalleled credentials: "This role is fundamental to the FIA, and Malcolm Wilson brings immense, hands-on experience. With over four decades competing at motorsport's pinnacle, both behind the wheel and as a technical leader for teams, his insights will be indispensable." The Assembly also overwhelmingly approved proposed updates to FIA statutes (83.35%) and ethics code revisions (88.83%), signaling strong member consensus on governance reforms.
FIA Achieves Stunning Financial Rebound
Alongside the leadership news, the FIA unveiled its 2024 financial results, showcasing a remarkable fiscal transformation. Confronting significant challenges upon assuming leadership in late 2021, Ben Sulayem's team implemented strategic restructuring and a revised financial framework, yielding impressive outcomes:
- Dramatic Surplus: Achieved a €4.7 million operating surplus in 2024 – a stunning reversal from the €24.0 million deficit recorded in 2021. This represents a positive swing of €28.7 million.
- Year-on-Year Growth: The 2024 operating result improved by €5.4 million compared to 2023's slight deficit (-€0.8 million).
- Robust Financial Health: While the 2024 net result (€3.7 million) was lower than 2023's €7.2 million, the FIA's overall financial position is now demonstrably strong.
- Strengthened Balance Sheet: Total assets grew significantly by €16.5 million to €235 million. The equity ratio stands at a solid 45%, with zero financial debt.
- Substantial Cash Reserves: Cash and equivalents reached €156.7 million, representing a healthy 67% of total assets.
"This mid-year conference offers a moment to recognize our collective achievements," stated President Ben Sulayem. "Publishing our 2024 Activity Report marks a pivotal milestone: for the first time in eight years, the FIA is financially secure.
This strength empowers us to robustly support our Member Clubs globally, driving essential initiatives in grassroots development, innovation, and sustainability. This is a defining moment for our Federation."
Ben Sulayem Positioned for Re-Election
Amidst this wave of positive momentum and organizational stability, reports indicate President Ben Sulayem has secured significant support from member clubs across Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East as he seeks re-election. Currently anticipated to run unopposed, Ben Sulayem's leadership appears bolstered by the FIA's improved governance and solid financial footing. While former rally champion Carlos Sainz was previously speculated as a potential challenger, sources indicate he will not enter the presidential race.
