C.J. Stroud's Sore Shoulder Raises Concerns During Texans' OTAs
Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is currently not throwing the football at OTAs due to a sore shoulder. Coach DeMeco Ryans says they are taking extra precaution and there are no concerns. Stroud has a history of shoulder issues dating back to college and early in his rookie season, but has otherwise been durable, missing only two games due to a concussion. The severity of his current soreness is uncertain.

Houston Texans star quarterback C.J. Stroud remains absent from throwing drills as the team's Organized Team Activities (OTAs) progress. Observers noted Stroud refrained from passing during Tuesday's crucial session due to reported soreness in his shoulder.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans quickly addressed any potential alarm, characterizing the situation as purely precautionary. "There's no concerns with C.J.," Ryans stated. "It's just general soreness. We're taking extra precaution with him, but he'll be good to go. No concerns on my end."
This recent shoulder issue isn't Stroud's first encounter. While quarterbacking Ohio State during his redshirt freshman year in 2021, Stroud missed the team's Week 4 contest against Akron because of shoulder discomfort. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day indicated that rest seemed the best remedy at that time, saying Stroud couldn't shake a lingering sensation.
Stroud rebounded quickly in college, returning the following week and starting every subsequent game throughout his record-setting Ohio State career without missing another contest.
The pattern resurfaced early in his rookie NFL season. Heading into Week 2 of 2023 against the Indianapolis Colts, Stroud appeared on the injury report listed as questionable with a right shoulder problem. Demonstrating toughness, he started the game anyway, delivering an impressive performance with 384 passing yards and two touchdowns despite the injury.
Stroud's pro career has largely showcased remarkable durability. He has started 30 of a possible 32 games across two seasons. The only absences stemmed from a concussion suffered late in his rookie year during a Week 14 game against the New York Jets. Last season, under Ryans in 2023, Stroud started every single contest.
It's unclear whether the current shoulder soreness will escalate into a more significant concern. Previously, similar issues emerged early in both his 2021 college campaign and his 2023 NFL season and were managed effectively. The ongoing OTA situation appears focused on proactive rest and caution as Stroud gears up for the demanding 2024 schedule. The Texans' approach prioritizes his long-term health and readiness for Week 1 over short-term OTA reps.
