Matic's Jab Hits Home: Onana's Blunders Gift Lyon a Tie

As Lyon won 2-2 in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal due to two mistakes, Andre Onana did little to refute Nemanja Matic's assertions that he is among Manchester United's worst goalkeepers ever.

In the lead-up to the match, Onana and the former Manchester United player got into a verbal altercation, but Onana made two mistakes that directly contributed to Lyon's two goals, further aggravating the put-down of the now-Lyon midfielder.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Matic stated, "If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history, you need to take responsibility." The goalkeeper had inadvertently ignited the widely publicized dispute prior to the match by claiming that Manchester United was superior to the opposing team.

Thiago Almada's bouncing free kick was missed by Onana's first mistake, but goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, the latter three minutes from time, appeared to have relieved the Cameroonian goalkeeper's pressure.

But things were going to become worse. In a Manchester United shirt, his ninth mistake that resulted in a goal was arguably the most agonizing of his career. Georges Mikautadze's shot was spilled at Rayan Cherki's feet, allowing Lyon to tie the score with less than 30 seconds remaining in injury time.

For Manchester United to advance, they must now defeat Lyon in the rematch in seven days, but things could have gone very differently.

The club's opening goal was secured by Yoro, who deftly redirected Manuel Ugarte's powerful attempt just prior to halftime. Following his substitution, Zirkzee delivered an impeccable response with a commanding header from Bruno Fernandes' cross, which appeared decisive in determining the match's outcome.

However, the blame will be squarely put on Onana for losing his side a crucial first-leg victory following his most recent error in an increasingly challenging personal season.
