A scary moment unfolded early in the second period of the decisive Game 7 between the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Veteran NHL referee Chris Rooney was injured after taking a high stick to the face.
The incident occurred just 13 seconds into the period when Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola's clearing attempt went awry. Mikkola's follow-through accidentally struck Rooney, knocking off his helmet and sending him to the ice.
Rooney remained down for several minutes, visibly injured and clutching his face. A stretcher was brought out as a precaution. He eventually managed to leave the ice with assistance, a towel pressed against his face.
TNT reported during the third period that Rooney required stitches above his eye and would not be able to continue officiating the game. Backup referee Garrett Rank stepped in to take his place.
At the time of the injury, the game was scoreless. However, the Panthers subsequently erupted for three quick goals and ultimately cruised to a 6-1 victory, securing their third straight appearance in the conference final. The incident undoubtedly added an unexpected element to an already intense playoff game.
