Grizzlies Trade Desmond Bane to Magic for Caldwell-Pope, Anthony, and Massive Draft Haul

Must Read

The Orlando Magic have secured a major backcourt upgrade, finalizing a deal to obtain standout guard Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies. In return, Memphis receives guards Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony, along with significant draft capital to fuel their future rebuild.

ESPN initially broke news of the agreement, with the media—USA TODAY Sports later confirming details through an anonymous source close to negotiations. The trade awaits formal league approval before becoming official.

Memphis gains substantial future assets: Orlando's 2025 first-round pick (16th overall), Phoenix's 2026 first-round selection, and unprotected first-rounders in 2028 and 2030. A first-round pick swap further bolsters the Grizzlies' flexibility in upcoming drafts.

Bane, 26, arrives in Orlando after a career-best season, averaging 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. His two-way prowess helped Memphis secure 48 wins before a first-round playoff exit against Oklahoma City. Entering his prime, Bane adds scoring punch and veteran stability to a young Magic core.

Orlando's aggressive move signals urgency to elevate their playoff trajectory. Despite consecutive postseason appearances behind All-Star Paolo Banchero and forward Franz Wagner, the Magic have stumbled in the opening round both years. Bane's arrival addresses their need for backcourt creation and clutch scoring.

For Memphis, parting with Bane accelerates a strategic pivot toward accumulating assets. Caldwell-Pope brings championship experience and perimeter defense, while Anthony offers bench scoring upside. The draft haul—including four unprotected picks—positions the Grizzlies to either replenish talent or package picks for another star.

This trade reshapes both franchises dramatically. Orlando accelerates its contention timeline in the competitive East, while Memphis prioritizes long-term flexibility. As free agency unfolds, expect both teams to remain active in refining their revamped rosters.
