Oscar De La Hoya Addresses Immigration Protests in Los Angeles

Must Read

Oscar De La Hoya, boxing legend and son of Mexican immigrants, has spoken out about the immigration protests rocking Los Angeles. The protests, triggered by ICE raids, have sometimes resulted in clashes.

De La Hoya, a proud Mexican-American and dual citizen, released a statement expressing his feelings about the situation.

"I'm deeply saddened by the current events unfolding in Los Angeles," De La Hoya stated. He emphasized the vital role immigrants play in the city's fabric. "Immigrants are the lifeblood of Los Angeles. They are our neighbors, friends, and essential members of our society. Latino people, known for their strong work ethic, enrich every aspect of our lives."

Growing up in East Los Angeles, a vibrant Latino community, significantly shaped De La Hoya. A defining moment was at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where, after securing a gold medal, he proudly displayed both the American and Mexican flags.

He further commented on his personal connection to the issue, stating, "I am forever grateful for the sacrifices my family made when they emigrated from Mexico to the United States, seeking a better life. Their bravery paved the way for the opportunities I have been fortunate enough to receive."

De La Hoya's illustrious boxing career includes eight world titles across six weight classes. He retired in 2009 and was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014. He is also the founder and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, a leading force in the boxing world. A request for further comment from De La Hoya, via Golden Boy Promotions, was unavailable.
