Shemar Stewart Holds Out, Trey Hendrickson Absent as Bengals Face Contract Disputes

Must Read

The Cincinnati Bengals' highly touted first-round draft pick, edge rusher Shemar Stewart, has escalated his contract standoff with the team by departing from mandatory minicamp. This move underscores the deepening rift between Stewart and the Bengals' front office regarding the terms of his rookie deal.

Sources indicate that the sticking point revolves around the Bengals' push to incorporate language into rookie contracts that would give them the ability to nullify future guaranteed money. Stewart's representatives are reportedly seeking contract language consistent with that given to the Bengals' prior first-round selections, defensive end Myles Murphy and right tackle Amarius Mims.

Since being drafted out of Texas A&M a month and a half ago, Stewart has been absent from all on-field activities, including rookie minicamp and Organized Team Activities (OTAs). While he had previously been present for team offseason programs, his departure from minicamp signals a firm stance in the ongoing negotiations.

Adding to the Bengals' defensive woes, star defensive end Trey Hendrickson, coming off a sensational season where he led the league in sacks, is also holding out. Hendrickson, slated to hit free agency after the 2025 season, is seeking a new multiyear contract, but reports suggest that discussions between him and the Bengals have stalled, leading to his absence from minicamp as well.

The Bengals now face the challenge of resolving these contract disputes with two key defensive players as they prepare for the upcoming season. The absence of both Stewart and Hendrickson from team activities raises concerns about their readiness and integration into the defensive scheme.
