Stan Sport Takes Over Premier League Rights as Optus Sport Exits Australian Market

Must Read

Australian football viewership is set for a major shake-up. Optus Sport will officially cease operations on August 1, 2024, after finalizing a landmark broadcasting deal with Nine Entertainment that transfers premier football rights—including the English Premier League and FA Cup—to Stan Sport.

The multi-year agreement, estimated at $300 million, represents a strategic power move for Stan Sport, elevating its position as Australia's foremost digital destination for top-tier global sports content.

Premier League, FA Cup, and More Headed to Stan

In addition to securing the EPL and FA Cup, Stan Sport has also acquired broadcasting rights for Japan's J.League and the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). These join Stan's existing premium offerings, which include the UEFA Champions League, Wimbledon, Super Rugby, and the British & Irish Lions tour.

"This marks a step change in Nine's digital growth strategy," said Matt Stanton, CEO of Nine Entertainment. "Acquiring the Premier League—the world's most-watched football league—cements Stan's reputation as Australia's home for world-class sport."

Optus Sport Transition and Shutdown Details

Existing Optus Sport subscribers will retain access through August 1st, including full coverage of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025, which kicks off July 3rd. After this date, all football content will shift exclusively to Stan Sport.

As part of the transition, Stan will provide discounted subscription packages to active Optus telecommunications customers, with additional offers available for users currently subscribed to both Optus Sport and Stan.

Financial Breakdown and Strategic Shifts

The deal includes a $20 million upfront payment from Stan to Optus. Stan will also take on the annual Premier League licensing fees, estimated at $100 million per cycle, with Optus contributing $40 million annually for the initial handover period.

Launched in 2016, Optus Sport rapidly became a dominant force in Australian sports streaming, known for its exclusive coverage of major tournaments like the FIFA World Cup. The platform's closure significantly reshapes the competitive streaming landscape, positioning Stan Sport as the key rival to Foxtel's Kayo Sports, which holds exclusive rights to Australia's AFL and NRL competitions.

Legacy and Customer Commitment

Reflecting on the platform's impact, Optus CEO Stephen Rue said:

"Optus Sport has played a critical role in growing football in Australia, especially through historic events like the record-breaking 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and the recent UEFA Euro 2024. We're proud of the legacy we leave behind."

What's Next: New Era for Football Streaming in Australia

Stan Sport will begin EPL coverage ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, which begins August 16. As a preview, the service will air the FA Community Shield between Liverpool and Crystal Palace on August 11, marking its first major football event post-transition.

Stan will hold these broadcast rights through at least 2028, ensuring continuity for fans in Australia seeking premium international football coverage.

Meanwhile, A-League Men's and Women's competitions, along with international fixtures featuring the Socceroos and Matildas, will continue exclusively on Paramount+ and Channel 10, with no change in coverage.
