Southern California's Big Bear Valley is abuzz with anticipation as the eaglet duo, Sunny and Gizmo, prepare to leave their nest and begin their independent lives. The offspring of celebrity bald eagle parents, Jackie and Shadow, these young birds have captured the hearts of online viewers worldwide.

The dedicated fanbase closely monitors the family through a 24/7 live stream operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley, a local non-profit organization. Born in March 2025, Sunny and Gizmo are now reaching a crucial stage in their development.

At ten weeks old, the eaglets are undergoing flight training within the safety of their nest, guided by their experienced parents. Jackie and Shadow are strategically using larger branches as guardrails and aids to strengthen the young birds' wings.

According to Friends of Big Bear Valley's recent Facebook update, Sunny and Gizmo are actively practicing. The organization has noted that the eaglets have been observed perched on the edges of the nest, gazing out at their future territory. They are also taking advantage of windy conditions to stretch and flap their wings, building the necessary muscle power.

One exciting moment occurred when Sunny briefly hovered off the nest, propelled by a strong gust of wind and enthusiastic hops. These hovering attempts are crucial as the eaglets transition to full flight, strengthening their muscles and building confidence for venturing onto nearby branches.

Tragically, a third eaglet, named Misty, didn't survive a recent snowstorm. Jackie and Shadow's dedication to their remaining offspring ensures Sunny and Gizmo receive the care and nourishment they need to thrive. Sandy Steers, the executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley, stated that the parents will continue to support the fledglings even after they leave the nest, providing food and guidance as they learn to hunt on their own.

Friends of Big Bear Valley is engaging with eagle enthusiasts through FledgeFest 2025, a contest where viewers can predict the exact date and time of Sunny and Gizmo's first flights. The participant who guesses correctly will receive an honorary certificate. The contest deadline is May 16 at 8 p.m. PT.
