Thailand Unveils $1.2 Billion Plan to Host Bangkok Formula 1 Street Race Starting in 2028

Thailand has officially entered the race to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, announcing a bold $1.2 billion bid to bring a street circuit to the heart of Bangkok by 2028. The Thai government approved the plan this week, aiming to secure a five-year deal that would see the Bangkok Grand Prix featured on the F1 calendar through 2032.

Government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub emphasized the event's potential to elevate Thailand's global profile, calling it a "world-class achievement." Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong confirmed the bid's value at approximately 40 billion baht ($1.23 billion USD).

The move is part of Thailand's strategic effort to supercharge its tourism industry—a major driver of the national economy. While the country currently hosts MotoGP races at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, officials are now setting their sights on the prestige and international spotlight of Formula 1, particularly with a city-based race in Bangkok.

Thailand's campaign gained momentum after Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in March. The meeting led to the commissioning of a feasibility study exploring the logistics and economic impact of a Bangkok street race.

However, joining the F1 calendar won't be easy. With a crowded 24-race season already in place—including four existing Asia-Pacific events like the popular Singapore night race—integrating a new venue will require precise scheduling and coordination.

If successful, the Bangkok Grand Prix would mark a significant expansion of Formula 1's presence in Southeast Asia and position Thailand as a rising player in international motorsports. The proposed race is set to debut in 2028, signaling a new era for both Thai tourism and global F1 fans.
